Today we took our math lesson outside!! A look at the standards revealed I needed to teach parallel lines, transversals, and angles formed by them (8GM1).  My first thoughts were, “How can I teach this standard so that the kids can move and get out of the classroom”? The answer came quickly: “Go to the parking lot”.

So, I rolled my whiteboard and supply cart out to the school’s parking lot, and the rest, as they say, is historyWe talked about the parking lines and the kids discovered that these were parallel lines and that no matter how far they “carried” the two lines, they would never intersect, and they were equally distanced from each other. In addition, we added a transversal, and the kids discovered the transversal cut the parallel lines and resulted in 8 angles.

Now everyone who parks in the BMSD can see how much fun learning can be when you get out and move!
