Why are these students sitting on the stairs and what are they doing? Simply put, these students are engaging, touching, and learning math.  The objective was to use the stairs as a model to prove the Pythagorean Theorem which says that 2 “legs” of a right triangle squared are equal to the square root of the triangle’s hypotenuse.   They then measured the model’s “legs” and squared the measurements.  Lastly, they discovered that the Pythagorean Theorem was, in fact, true because the “legs” squared was equal to the hypotenuse squared.
